General

The modern-day Anzac match was conceived in the mid-1990s by Essendon’s coach at the time, Kevin Sheedy. After serving two years in the Army, he considered the impact football had on Australians and the role it could play in tributing those who have served their country. Though matches had previously been played on Anzac Day, the first modern-day Anzac match between Collingwood and Essendon quickly became highly-anticipated with thousands flocking to the MCG to watch the big clash. With a whopping 94,825 fans in attendance, the crowd could be heard from more than 1 km away. This record-breaking attendance remains one of the highest attendances in AFL history.

The Anzac match has continued to grow in popularity throughout the years, with sell-out crowds attending each year. It is a day for Australian’s to celebrate in true Anzac spirit and pay tribute to those who have served the nation.

It’s home to many of Australia’s best-known landmarks including Melbourne Cricket Ground, NGV and Royal Exhibition Building. It is also the birthplace of Australian Rules Football. Melbourne’s growth was largely thanks to the discovery of gold in Victoria in mid-1851; diggers rushed to Melbourne causing a large population growth and heightened wealth. With this came a need for public infrastructure; large public buildings were erected including Parliament House, the Melbourne Gaol, the State Library, Melbourne Town Hall and St Patrick’s Cathedral.

The city continued to boom throughout the late 1800s, with Melbourne quickly becoming the richest city in the world; the tramway system was built, large commercial buildings erected and coffee places and terrace houses were popping up everywhere. After World War II Melbourne expanded again due to immigration from southern Europe and the Mediterranean. Collins street became popular with boutique shops and open-air cafes, now locally known as The Paris End of Town. Melbourne today is known for its diverse culture, arts and music scene, incredible food and coffee, beautiful beachside towns and love of sports. Popular places to visit include the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Cricket Ground, Luna Park, Queen Victoria Market and Melbourne Museum.

All card payments incur merchant fees. For Visa and MasterCard it’s 1.5% and for American Express it’s 1.98%.

After making a booking, you will receive a deposit invoice and booking confirmation. Your deposit invoice contains payment instructions and your booking confirmation outlines the services you have booked. To secure your booking, you need to pay your deposit invoice. Once you’ve done that you’ll be all set.

If the event is still a while away, you will receive email updates with more information about your trip, including important event announcements such as finalised teams and player lists, entertainment line-ups, venue maps, event schedules and more.

Approximately 2-4 weeks before your event begins, we start sending out travel documents. Travel documents generally contain a travel documents email and a parcel. Your travel documents email outlines your booking and important information relating to your trip, while your parcel contains the physical items you require (if any). These physical items may be event tickets, ticket holders and lanyards, merchandise and other items. To be more sustainable, where possible we only send the travel documents email, so you may not receive a parcel if your tickets and other items can be sent digitally. We’ll let you know if this applies after booking.

For some events, or if you live internationally and cannot receive your parcel within the available timeframe, we will make your parcel available for collection from your hotel or an official collection centre. If this is the case, you will be advised within your travel documents email, this always comes first.

Events Travel’s COVID-19 Global Pandemic Statement

Dear Customers,

In these extraordinary times, we hope you are staying safe and well.

We are optimistic about travel opening up domestically in the next few months within Australia and travel to New Zealand permitted in September. After this, we expect travel to open within the Asia-Pacific region and globally by early 2021.

As such, our full range of packages, tours and services are now on sale for events taking place after 15 September 2020. In addition, events taking place in 2021 and 2022 are now on sale (such as The 150th Open Championship).

All events are pending Government travel restrictions, as well as general health and safety notices published by DFAT Smartraveller. If an event is cancelled, postponed or spectator free due to COVID-19, customers can choose to use their booking payments as credit to the rescheduled event or receive a full refund less a booking fee. This booking fees varies by event and product. Full details are available within our Booking Terms and Conditions.
