Overview

The Masters Tournament, commonly referred to as the US Masters, is the first of four golf majors held each year and is the only major held annually at the same course. The other majors are The Open Championship, the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship. The Masters takes place at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. It’s one of the most prestigious, iconic and traditional sporting events.

The Masters is a special event and is often cited as ‘the best event you can attend on the planet’. And that’s coming from golf fans, non-golf fans, journalists and celebrities. We tend to agree.

It’s the traditions, setting and reverence for the game, the players and the spectators that sets the US Masters apart. The action takes place at Augusta National, which is quite simply the most impeccable sporting venue on the planet. The straw is imported, the bird sounds come from speakers, the flowers are always in peak bloom, the fairways are seemingly hand-trimmed and there is no litter, no advertising, no running, no yelling, no phones and no cameras. There’s no price-gouging, no cheap gimmicks and nothing really that American about it. It’s an unusual concoction that makes for a pristine and wholesome spectating experience.

The Masters is without doubt one of the best sporting experiences on the planet and one you have to see for yourself. That’s where we step in.

General

  • The 2020 Masters Tournament was postponed from April 2020 to November 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions
  • The 2019 Masters was won by Tiger Woods, claiming his fifth Green Jacket and fifteenth major finishing one stroke ahead of three runners-up. This performance has been regarded as one of sports biggest come backs after his public fall from grace
  • The 2021 Masters Tournament will be the 85th edition
  • Prize pool is US$11,000,000
  • Field is approx. 85 players
  • Augusta National is a par-72 course at 6835m in length with approx. 50m elevation
  • Augusta National was founded in 1932 and is renowned for its impeccable appearance. Pine straw is imported, bird sounds are played from hidden speakers and once the ponds were dyed blue
  • Augusta National is home to only 300 members including Condoleezza Rice, one of only four female members, alongside Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and numerous high profile business leaders
  • Magnolia Lane is the entrance to the golf club, flanked by large magnolia trees and is an iconic part of the tournament’s history
  • The course was once a plant nursery. Each hole is named after a tree or shrub which has some relation to the site’s past use
  • Bunkers are not filled with sand, but material from feldspar mines in North Carolina
  • Amen Corner is one of the best spectating areas with the second shot on the 11th, all of the 12th and the first shot on the 13th visible. This is a popular place to put a chair or perch in a grandstand

Traditions

What makes The Masters Tournament so special is the unique traditions that are strictly upheld. Here are a few highlights:

  • At the start of play on Thursday, the first tee shot is a ceremonial one, always taken by a golfing legend to pay tribute and respect to the sport’s past
  • There is a traditional par-3 contest held on the Wednesday before the first round on a dedicated par-3 course at Augusta National. This course has short, fun holes designed for spectating. The general atmosphere is jovial and lighthearted. The 16th hole is best played by skimming the ball across the pond to the green and is a popular vantage point for spectators. Players often have their families, friends and celebrities in attendance within their entourage or as caddies. It’s also the only day cameras are allowed on the course
  • On Tuesday of Masters week, all previous winners gather for a seated dinner in the Clubhouse. The previous winner chooses the menu and often chooses dishes from their homeland
  • The Masters winner is presented with the Green Jacket, one of the most famous aspects of The Masters. Winners keep their jacket, specifically tailored to them, for one year before returning it to the club and will present the new winner with their own Masters jacket on the Sunday. They can only wear the jacket at the club
  • There are no sponsors on course, no signage, no advertising and no commercial aspects, adding to the beauty and class of the tournament. The Masters keeps their prices low too. The food and beverage offering is simple and traditional. At outlets around the course, you can buy a sandwich and a drink for as little as $5-7
  • No autographs are permitted at The Masters and fans are not allowed to approach golfers on game day
  • No cell phones, cameras or electronic devices are permitted on any day of play except the par-3 contest and spectators are required to turn over devices on entry to a locker. Security are strict about it too and spectators can be permanently banned, so best leave your camera and phone at the hotel on days of play. This makes the viewing and playing experience much better for spectators and golfers.
  • Spectators can bring in one chair per person. Other spectators are so respectful at The Masters that you can leave your chair where you wish and it won’t be moved by others!

Destination

Your Host:

Augusta is an eastern city in Georgia, near the border of South Carolina, in the south of the United States. The city is located on the banks of the Savannah River and is best known for hosting the Masters each year, as well as being soul singer James Brown’s home town. Downtown Augusta today celebrates its colourful past while being proud of its exciting present and southern charm. Augusta National is not in downtown Augusta, but it’s a great place to visit if you have a day off. Across the border in South Carolina is the charming town of Aiken, an equestrian community rich in historic charm and tradition. The postcard-perfect town is home to gardens, an iconic roadway of living oak trees, cute cafes, historic buildings and fabulous golf courses.

Augusta is a great stepping stone to explore the south including the Carolinas, New Orleans and Florida after your US Masters travel experience.

Climate

April in the US is Spring. Typically, during this time in Augusta, the weather is warm and pleasant. Not much rain is expected during Masters week. Just twice since 2010 has rain fallen during the tournament, 2013 and 2019. Mornings however can be cool and refreshing. Travellers should expect highs of 22°C and lows of 16°C with plenty of sunshine — perfect for golf spectating, playing and travelling.

Events Travel’s COVID-19 Global Pandemic Statement

Dear Customers,

In these extraordinary times, we hope you are staying safe and well.

We are optimistic about travel opening up domestically in the next few months within Australia and travel to New Zealand permitted in September. After this, we expect travel to open within the Asia-Pacific region and globally by early 2021.

As such, our full range of packages, tours and services are now on sale for events taking place after 8 October 2020. In addition, events taking place in 2021 and 2022 are now on sale (such as The 150th Open Championship).

All events are pending Government travel restrictions, as well as general health and safety notices published by DFAT Smartraveller. This booking fee varies by event. Full details are available within our Booking Terms and Conditions.

We hope that this new policy provides you with reassurance and confidence when booking your sports travel experience with Events Travel.
