Bathurst is the oldest inland settlement in Australia, located 200 km northwest of Sydney. Although the town has a rich Aboriginal history, it was officially declared a townsite in 1815. Its popularity and growth is thanks to the discovery of gold in Australia in the mid-1800s, and its central location meant it was used as a gateway for exploration and development of the New South Wales region. Now, the region is a large producer of agriculture including vegetables, honey, fruits, forestry and grapes. Enjoy discovering this historically rich town dating back 40,000 years when it was once Aboriginal land through to the settlement and colonial growth that makes it the town it is today; lined with heritage-listed buildings and colonial mansions.
Bathurst has a temperate climate, and sits 650 metres above sea level, which means average rainfall is higher in this region. In October, you can expect highs of 21°C and lows of 7°C. Pack a rain jacket and warm layers to ensure race-day comfort and consider bringing an umbrella or hat to ensure all bases are covered — long days out at Mount Panorama can mean fans experience all types of weather.
