ATP Cup is the newest and most exciting tennis tournament to hit the circuit!

The ATP Cup debuted in January 2020 with 24 countries competing for a share of a huge AU$22 million in prize money. The exciting team format has captivated fans across the world with rounds played at three host cities in the first year: Brisbane, Perth and Sydney. The ATP Cup has replaced Brisbane International, Sydney International and the Hopman Cup and has proven to be widely successful in it’s inaugural showing. The unique format starts with six groups of four countries who compete in the Group Stages in a round-robin format. Each country competes in a tie, which consists of two singles matches and one doubles match. The six winners of the pools and the two best second-place getters move to the Final Eight. This exciting format ensures you see the top players in the world competing for their country to take home the trophy in the Sydney based final. The first ATP Cup was won by Serbia, with Novak Djokovic defeating Rafael Nadal in the final singles match to stop Spains 1- 0 advantage and move the tie to a doubles match to decide the winner. The deciding doubles match was won by Serbia with Novak Djokovic and Viktor Troicki beating Spains Feliciano Lopez and Pablo Carreno Busta to win the inaugural ATP Cup and cement the ATP Cup as a stayer on the ATP Tour.

Event Information

What is the ATP Cup?

The ATP Cup is a new tournament that started in 2020 and has replaced the Brisbane International, Sydney Internationl and Hopman Cup. It’s an annual 24-country team competition with a unique and exciting format.

How does the tournament work?

24 teams are divided into six groups of four for a group stage, round-robin. The six winners from each group and the two best second-placed countries move to the Final Eight. The round-robin format is made-up of ties, these are two singles and one doubles match. The country that wins two matches, wins the tie. Each country plays three ties in the group stage. Singles will be best-of-three tie-break sets and doubles have no-ad scoring and a match tie-break instead of a third set. This means matches are faster and even more exciting.

When will teams be announced?

The top 18 teams will be announced in September 2020 and the remaining five teams in November 2020.

How much is the prize money?

The total pool is A$22 million.

Can a player play singles and doubles?

Yes. The team captain decides who plays doubles. In regard to singles, the ATP Ranking dictates who plays singles. The No. 1 ranked player on a team cannot play No. 2 singles. This is to ensure the best ranked players from each team play each other.
