Australia’s biggest sporting event is a two-week celebration of tennis, non-stop entertainment and excitement for the entire family.
The Australian Open is one of the four tennis Grand Slams and is the first held annually, followed by the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. The Australian Open is the biggest sporting event in Australia (and biggest Grand Slam) and attracts almost 800,000 fans over the two-week event period. This is thanks to the large area at Melbourne Park, numerous show courts, public spaces, hospitality venues and three major Arenas. Fans can watch the action at Melbourne Arena, Margaret Court Arena and the famous Rod Laver Arena, which is ‘centre court’ and hosts big matches as well as the Finals.
Fans will enjoy the festival-like atmosphere with activities for all ages including a children’s day-care centre with movies and an expansive fun-park. Now the kids are taken care of, grown-ups can enjoy brand activations, bars, live-music and DJs, gourmet food experiences, concerts and free-seating show courts and Arenas. You can enjoy all of this with just a Grounds Pass, but for the serious fans and the biggest matches, you can’t go past a Rod Laver Arena Ticket. This gives you a reserved seat in Rod Laver Arena, which has recently been refurbished and offers an incredibly close and comfortable tennis viewing experience that’s a must.
Many fans come during the first-week to explore Melbourne Park, take part in the activities and watch quality tennis, including all their favourite players on the show courts and Arenas before eliminations happen. During the second week, things start getting serious as the tournament progresses to Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and concludes with the Women’s and Men’s Finals on the last Saturday and Sunday. Throughout the two weeks there is Juniors, Doubles and Wheelchair tournaments happening across Melbourne Park. Everywhere you look, there’s an exciting match underway.
January is a fantastic time to visit Melbourne, with warm weather making day-trips to the beaches, parks and attractions very enjoyable. And the long summer days ensure you make the most of the evenings and atmosphere at the Australian Open.
