The Ashes is one of sports greatest rivalries. Full of history, prestige and camaraderie, the Ashes is a best of five Test series held biannually, alternating between the UK and Australia and contested by Australia and England’s top Test cricket teams. The Ashes concept dates back to 1882, when Australia defeated England at The Oval. A bold journalist named Reginald Shirley Brooks wrote a mock obituary of the English side, remarking that English cricket died after the defeat. Three weeks after this humiliating obituary, the English side set-off to reclaim their ‘Ashes’ in Australia. Despite losing the first Test in Melbourne, the English side won the next two and effectively brought their Ashes back to England that year. This concept stuck and created one of the longest-running sporting rivalries in history and one that we get to enjoy every four years in the UK.
