Melbourne is the capital of Victoria and sits on the banks of the Yarra River. It’s home to many of Australia’s best-known landmarks including Melbourne Cricket Ground, NGV and Royal Exhibition Building. Melbourne’s growth was largely thanks to the discovery of gold in Victoria in mid-1851. Diggers rushed to Melbourne causing a large population growth and heightened wealth. With this came a need for public infrastructure; large public buildings were erected including Parliament House, the Melbourne Gaol, the State Library, Melbourne Town Hall and St Patrick’s Cathedral.
The city continued to boom throughout the late 1800s, with Melbourne quickly becoming the richest city in the world. After World War II, Melbourne expanded again due to immigration from southern Europe and the Mediterranean. Collins street became popular for boutique shops and open-air cafes, now locally known as The Paris End of Town.
Melbourne today is a dynamic cosmopolitan city with a laid back atmosphere, yet is stylish and forward-thinking. The city is renowned for creative arts, world-class dining, amazing galleries, shops and spectacular sports and events. Venture into the CBD to find hidden laneways brimming with street art from the world’s best, or head north to find bohemian shopping strips and the best Italian food outside of Italy. Just outside the CBD is the world-famous MCG and Melbourne Park, which hosts the Australian Open and is a short stroll or free tram ride away from the city. Intrepid travellers can spend days exploring wineries, nature areas and coastal drives all within a few hours drive from the CBD. Melbourne truly has something for everyone.
March and April in Melbourne is Autumn, expect average highs of 21°C and lows of 12°C with a quarter of days expected to have some rain.
Established in 1846, the tranquil Royal Botanic Gardens are must-see when in Melbourne. Inspired by the sub-tropics, you will find a mixture of flaxes, palms and other large foliage plants set among sweeping lawns and a central lake. The gardens are also home to the National Herbarium of Victoria storing Australia's most important dried flora collections.
The NGV was founded in 1861 and is the oldest gallery in Australia. It hosts a wide range of international and local exhibitions from art, fashion and design to architecture and dance. Discover permanent exhibitions of Indigenous Australia, Colonial Australia and modern Australia or explore the international exhibitions from world-renowned artists.

The market is home to 600 small businesses selling everything from fruit and vegetables, meats, gourmet deli items, and freshly baked bread to clothing and Australian souvenirs. This open-air market is a true Melbourne delight.
A short tram ride from Melbourne's CBD is the seaside town of St Kilda. The foreshore is buzzing with walkers, kite-surfers and swimmers with cafes and restaurants offering trendy beach-front refreshments. It's the perfect setting for a relaxing afternoon.
Melbourne is home to world-renowned street art, most notable is Hosier Lane, just off Flinders Street and Flinders Lane. Stop for a photo or enjoy a guided tour from a local Melburnian who will give you some history from the cities young, yet vibrant history.
Melbourne is Australia's foodie capital and home to some of the world's best restaurants. Try Lune for an exquisite pastry or head to Chin Chin, a beloved Melbourne staple.
