The US Masters is without doubt one of the best sporting experiences you can have, whether you’re a golfer or not. Fast facts

  • The 2019 Masters was won by Tiger Woods, claiming his fifth Green Jacket and fifteenth major; finishing one stroke ahead of three runners-up. This performance has been regarded as one of sports biggest come backs after his public fall from grace
  • Prize pool is US$11,000,000
  • Field is approx. 85 players
  • Augusta National is a 6835 m, par-72 course
  • Augusta National was founded in 1932 and is renowned for its impeccable appearance. Pine straw is imported, bird sounds are played from hidden speakers and once the ponds were dyed blue
  • Augusta National is home to only 300 members including Condoleezza Rice, one of only four female members, alongside Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and numerous high profile business leaders
  • Magnolia Lane is the entrance to the golf club, flanked by large magnolia trees and is an iconic part of the tournaments history
  • The course was once a plant nursery. Each hole is named after a tree or shrub which has some relation to the sites past use
  • Bunkers are not filled with sand, but material from feldspar mines in North Carolina
  • Amen Corner is one of the best spectating areas; with the second shot on the 11th, all of the 12th and the first shot on the 13th visible. This is a popular place to put a chair or perch in a grandstand

What makes The Masters Tournament so special is the unique traditions that are strictly upheld. Here are a few highlights:

  • At the start of play on Thursday, the first tee shot is a ceremonial one, always taken by a golfing legend to pay tribute and respect to the sports’ past
  • There is a traditional par-3 contest held on the Wednesday before the first round on a dedicated par-3 course at Augusta National. This course has short, fun holes designed for spectating. The general atmosphere is jovial and light-hearted. The 16th hole is best played by skimming the ball across the pond to the green and is a popular vantage point for spectators. Players often have their families, friends and celebrities in attendance within their entourage or as caddies. It’s also the only day cameras are allowed on the course
  • On Tuesday of Masters week, all previous winners gather for a seated dinner in the Clubhouse. The previous winner chooses the menu and often chooses dishes from their homeland
  • The Masters winner is presented with the Green Jacket, one of the most famous aspects of The Masters. Winners keep their jacket, specifically tailored to them, for one year before returning it to the club and will present the new winner with their own Masters jacket on the Sunday. They can only wear the jacket at the club
  • There are no sponsors on course, no signage, no advertising and no commercial aspects, adding to the beauty and class of the tournament. The Masters keeps their prices low too. The food and beverage offering is simple and traditional. At outlets around the course, you can buy a sandwich and a drink for as little as $5-7
  • No autographs are permitted at The Masters and fans are not allowed to approach golfers on game day
  • No cell phones, cameras or electronic devices are permitted on any day of play except the par-3 contest and spectators are required to turn over devices on entry to a locker. Security are strict about it too and spectators can be permanently banned, so best leave your camera and phone at the hotel on days of play. This makes the viewing and playing experience much better for spectators and golfers.
  • Spectators can bring in one chair per person. Other spectators are so respectful at The Masters that you can leave your chair where you wish and it won’t be moved by others, allowing you to come and go from your reserved spot throughout the day
  • The Wednesday Par-3 Contest is the only day of the tournament where phones and cameras are allowed on course. Security screening is in place to prevent fans from bringing prohibited items on course. If you want photos of your experience on course, we recommend attending the Par-3 Contest, which is also a lot of fun!
  • Fans are allowed to bring one chair per person and can put that anywhere around the course and it will stay there all day. While other fans may sit in your chair if it’s unoccupied, if it’s labelled they will move on your request. It’s all very friendly and if you arrive early, you’ll get the best chance to secure a great seat spot around the greens or tee boxes. On Sunday fans have been known to queue at the gates hours before they open!

Augusta is an eastern city in Georgia, which borders South Carolina, in the south of the United States. The city is located on the banks of the Savannah River and is best known for hosting the Masters each year. It’s also the home of soul singer James Brown. Downtown Augusta today celebrates its colourful past while being proud of its exciting present and oozes southern charm. Augusta National Golf Course is a 10-minute drive from downtown Augusta – a great place to visit if you have a day off. Across the border in South Carolina is the town of Aiken, an equestrian community rich in historic charm and tradition. This picture-perfect town is home to gardens, an iconic roadway of living oak trees, quaint cafes, historic buildings and fabulous golf courses.

Augusta is a great stepping stone to explore the south including the Carolinas, New Orleans and Florida after your US Masters travel experience.

It is springtime in the northern hemisphere in April. Typically during this time in Augusta, the weather is warm and pleasant. You shouldn’t expect too much rain while attending The Masters, just twice since 2010 has rain fallen during the tournament (2013 and 2019). Mornings can be cool and refreshing, so we always recommend packing layers. Highs will sit around 22°C and lows at 16°C; days are likely to be clear and sunny — perfect for travelling, playing and spectating golf.
