Event overview

Melbourne Cup Carnival is not just a horse race. It’s a four day celebration of sport, fashion, food and wine, and entertainment for the entire family.

The festivities are spread out over a week in the middle of spring in Melbourne. Four unique race days make up the carnival, Derby Day, Cup Day, Oaks Day and Stakes Day. Each race day has a different theme, traditions, dress guidelines, and racing categories appealing to a wide variety of audiences.

On Cup Day alone, the centrepiece of the carnival, over 100,000 fans frock-up at Flemington to experience the A$8 million dollar Melbourne Cup, one of the world’s most prestigious horse races. The 3200m event takes just 3 minutes and has come to define the careers of horses, jockeys, trainers and owners from around the world.

If Flemington is the ideal venue for the carnival, Melbourne is the perfect host city. Visitors to Australia’s sporting capital and most liveable city are never short of a unique experience, world-class attraction, quality restaurant, trendy shops, and plenty to see and do. Start your experience with a hand-selected luxury hotel overlooking the Yarra River, just walking distance to the cities top attractions. Make a booking at one the countries hottest restaurants and explore the expansive Crown Entertainment Complex or browse the NGV, home to renowned seasonal international exhibitions—the choices are endless.

From our featured hotels it’s an easy trip to and from Flemington, just north of the city. If you have time to stay a while, Melbourne has a multitude of fantastic things to see, do and taste, from hip bars to sandy beaches, wine regions, world-class coastal drives, vineyards, galleries and a thriving arts scene.

Whatever you fancy, Melbourne has something to offer within the city and just a few hours away. Why not extend your stay with a trip down the Great Ocean Road, or to a brewery on the Mornington Peninsula, converted from stables that Makybe Diva used to call home?

We’ve been helping fans from around the world travel to Melbourne to experience the fun and excitement of Melbourne Cup Carnival. Once again for 2022 we’re proud to be an Official Tourism Operator. I’d like to invite you to explore this brochure to find the package that best suits you and if you need a hand, our team of Travel Consultants are just a phone call or email away.

Whether you’re a first timer to Melbourne Cup Carnival or a veteran, our travel packages are a great value and quality way to enjoy the event, city and surrounds.

See you there,

Schedule

Penfolds Victoria Derby Day, Saturday, 29 October 2022 One of the most prestigious days of racing with nine group races, four at the elite group 1 level including the Penfolds Victoria Derby, Australia’s premier staying classic for three-year olds. The fashion stakes are equally high with the commencement of the Myer Fashions on the Field competition. This is the day for classic elegance, which sets the tone of the week. Women typically opt for black and white, while men wear a grey morning suit and pin-stripe pants.
Lexus Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday, 1 November 2022 The focal point of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, there’s nothing quite like being there as over 100,000 fans erupt as the race unfolds. The excitement slowly builds to its 3pm fever pitch when everything at the track comes to a stop for 200 heart-pounding seconds. Each year, a new chapter is written, a new legend is made and a new dream comes true in the quest to win Australia’s most famous sporting trophy.
Kennedy Oaks Day, Thursday, 3 November 2022 Known as the style day of the carnival and commonly called ‘Ladies Day’, women of all ages come together dressed in their most feminine ensemble. The winner of the Myer Fashions on the Field is announced, reinforcing its importance on the fashion calendar. The racing highlight is the Group 1 Kennedy Oaks, the classic for three-year old fillies over 2500m.
Paramount+ Stakes Day, Saturday, 5 November 2022 The Melbourne Cup Carnival concludes with Paramount+ Stakes Day, featuring Victoria’s premier 1600m event, the Group 1 Paramount+ Stakes. Paramount+ Stakes Day is the fastest growing race day for the four day carnival with crowds topping 80,000 in recent years. It is also recognised as the carnival’s family day, with the focus on family fun and an abundance of free activities available for children.

Melbourne

Melbourne is a dynamic cosmopolitan; stylish and forward-thinking yet laid-back and inviting. The city is renowned for creative arts, world-class dining, amazing galleries, and shops; it is also home to many of Australia’s best-known landmarks including Melbourne Cricket Ground, NGV and Royal Exhibition Building. Melbourne’s growth in the 1800s was largely thanks to the discovery of gold in Victoria in mid-1851 with people flocking to the city in the hope of finding wealth.

With the large growth in the population came a need for public infrastructure; large public buildings were erected including Parliament House, the Melbourne Gaol, the State Library, Melbourne Town Hall and St Patrick’s Cathedral. After World War II Melbourne expanded again due to immigration from southern Europe and the Mediterranean. The now-famous Collins street became popular with boutique shops and open-air cafes, now known as The Paris End of Town. Melbourne today is known for its diverse culture, arts and music scene, incredible food and coffee, beautiful beachside towns and love of sports.

Climate

November means springtime in Melbourne, which is a wonderful time to visit. The average high sits around 23C with lows around 12C. The days are getting longer with heightened UV Indexes, so remember to wear sunscreen. We suggest checking the forecast in advance and preparing for mixed weather. Many past Melbourne Cup Carnivals have seen beautiful blue skies, as well as cold weather and clouds. ‘That’s all part of the fun’ as we Melburnians like to say.

What’s the difference between a package and tour?

Packages are designed for independent travellers and typically include accommodation, event tickets and other travel services. If you book a package, you may not see other Events Travel customers or Events Travel staff during your trip. For some packages and events there may be tour desks, group transport, functions or ticket collection centres where you’ll see the Events Travel Onsite Team.

Tours on the other hand are fully escorted by Events Travel Staff (including a Tour Manager, local guides, professional drivers etc.) Our escorted tours are a full service and in-depth experience with like-minded people, typically in a small group of 20-40. Tours typically include the best event tickets, exclusive event experiences, luxury accommodation, premium transport, gourmet meals, tickets to attractions, tour merchandise and more. Our tours are often themed and include local experiences, culinary tastings and things you might not ordinarily do or get access to without being part of a group.

Why should I choose you?

We’re passionate about sports travel and have been providing world-class travel experiences to events since 1993. We are an official partner of many of the world’s biggest events and provide direct access to event tickets, hospitality, exclusive event experiences and priority seating allocations. We have a highly experienced team and specialise in providing high-end travel experiences with luxury accommodation, premium travel services and only use the best and most reliable suppliers. We are 100% Australian family owned and accredited by IATA, AFTA and ATAS.

But all this is largely superficial. All that matters to you is that we are really good at what we do and we care deeply about ensuring our customers have a world-class travel experience at a great price.
