State of Origin is Aussie sports fiercest rivalry. The annual best-of-three series pits two state teams against each other, the New South Wales Blues and the Queensland Maroons. These teams are comprised of players selected primarily based on the state in which they first played senior (club) rugby league, giving the competition a unique and intense home-grown rivalry.
The series is celebrated for its high intensity, passion and the fierce loyalty it inspires amongst fans. Players often describe being selected for their state team as one of the highest honours in their careers, and the matches are known for their physicality, skilful play and dramatic moments. The rivalry between the Blues and the Maroons transcends the sport, becoming a matter of state pride, with fans from each state donning their team’s colours and passionately supporting their side.
The origins of the series date back to 1980, and it has grown in popularity ever since. It is held annually, typically with one game played in New South Wales, one in Queensland, and the other game in Victoria, South Australia or Western Australia. The series attracts massive television audiences, and the stadiums are usually sold out, with fans creating an electrifying atmosphere.
