Bathurst is the oldest inland settlement in Australia, located 200 km northwest of Sydney. Although the town has a rich Aboriginal history, it was officially declared a townsite in 1815. Its popularity and growth is thanks to the discovery of gold in Australia in the mid-1800s, and its central location meant it was used as a gateway for exploration and development of the New South Wales region. Now, the region is a large producer of agriculture including vegetables, honey, fruits, forestry and grapes. Enjoy discovering this historically rich town dating back 40,000 years when it was once Aboriginal land through to the settlement and colonial growth that makes it the town it is today; lined with heritage-listed buildings and colonial mansions.
Bathurst has a temperate climate and sits 650 metres above sea level, which means average rainfall is higher in this region. In October, you can expect highs of 21°C and lows of 7°C. Pack a rain jacket and warm layers to ensure race-day comfort and consider bringing an umbrella or hat to ensure all bases are covered — long days out at Mount Panorama can mean fans experience all types of weather.

Mount Panorama Circuit is 6.213 km long with a vertical variance of 174 metres, making this track an unusual design by modern standards. When races aren't being held at the circuit, it is a public road, though speed limits of 60 km/h are enforced. The track has three main viewing points; Pit Straight, Mountain Straight (long steep incline up Mount Panorama) and Conrod Straight (downhill with a fast chase).
Millthorpe has some fantastic restaurants and pubs to enjoy including the chef-hatted restaurant Tonic, the Old Mill Cafe (found in a heritage-listed building) and the classic Railway Pub which serves delicious country-style pub fare. For wine lovers, head to Slow Wine Co and taste some of the regions popular cool-climate wines.
The Macquarie River lies next to the town of Bathurst and is a part of the Murray Darling basin catchment. Wiradjuri people lived by the river for thousands of years as it is one of the main inland rivers of NSW. Now you can stroll along the River Walk enjoying the sights of the river and heritage-listed buildings that surround it.
If you're travelling from interstate or overseas, we recommend staying a few days in Sydney after the race to unwind and enjoy some of Australia's must-see attractions including Bondi Beach, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House, Taronga Zoo, Sydney Harbour and more. Our team can put together 4-star or 5-star Sydney stays at fabulous hotels including transport from Bathurst after or before the race.
