The Australian Open is the most open, most social and most enjoyable of the four Grand Slams. I’ve taken travellers to Melbourne every January for more than 30 years, and it’s the one they come back to most.

What makes it work is the combination: the tennis at Melbourne Park, a city at its best in summer, and a tournament built to be walked around rather than sat through. Getting the most out of it comes down to a hotel within reach of the courts, the right tickets for the right sessions, and someone on the ground who knows the event and the city. That’s what we do.

Australian Open ticket prices

Australian Open tickets are priced by day for a Ground Pass and by session and category for reserved seats; the table above shows the ranges. Ground Passes cost more on weekends and in the first week. Reserved seat prices rise through the tournament and peak at the finals on the second weekend. Public tickets may be dynamically priced by Tennis Australia and change without notice; tickets in Events Travel packages are fixed year-round, and early-bird pricing may apply.

Tickets are first available in official travel packages in January or February, just after the previous tournament ends. General public ticket sales typically open in August. Packages give fans access to tickets before public sale, and may offer tickets that have sold out during general public sale.

Australian Open Ground Pass

A Ground Pass, often searched as a grounds pass, admits you to Melbourne Park for a full day: Garden Square, Grand Slam Oval, concerts and entertainment, every outer court and show court, and John Cain Arena. Big screens around the precinct show the matches on Rod Laver and Margaret Court Arena. Pass-outs are allowed, so you can leave and return. A Ground Pass can be added to any package that doesn’t already include one.

Reserved seats on Rod Laver Arena and Margaret Court Arena

Rod Laver Arena and Margaret Court Arena need a reserved seat ticket for a day session or a night session. Each session usually has two singles matches; semi-finals and finals typically add a doubles final. When a day session ends you can stay within Melbourne Park with the same access as a Ground Pass into the evening. A night session ticket admits from 5:00pm; finals sessions admit earlier, usually from 11:00am.

Both arenas have retractable roofs. Sideline seats are generally in the sun during day sessions until it sets; the roof is usually closed for both finals, and closes in very hot weather, when the arena is air-conditioned. The seating maps show sun and shade, and our team will guide you on your seating preferences.

Australian Open finals tickets

The women’s final is Saturday 30 January and the men’s final Sunday 31 January, both night sessions at Rod Laver Arena. Finals are the first sessions to sell out on general public sale. Our Women’s Final, Men’s Final, Both Finals and Final Four packages include reserved Rod Laver Arena seats with two to four nights in Melbourne. Ticket upgrades, extra nights and other services are available.

Choosing your seat

Our packages, on Margaret Court Arena or Rod Laver Arena, start with upper baseline seats: the front half of the upper bowl on Rod Laver Arena, and the upper bowl on Margaret Court Arena. These seats are shaded, look down the baseline or across from the corners, and give a view similar to television, so you can follow the ball easily and take in the whole arena. If you would like to sit closer, on the baseline or the sideline, ticket upgrades are available while stocks last. Sideline seats are in the sun during the day, and on the western side may be partly obstructed by the umpire’s chair. Lower Sideline on the eastern side is a great seat for a night session once the sun sets, and gets you close to the court. Lower Baseline in the first few rows sells out quickly; check with our team for availability.

AO Reserve is Tennis Australia’s official hospitality programme: a Rod Laver Arena lower bowl seat paired with a restaurant, lounge or private space for the session. Events Travel sells AO Reserve within official travel packages and as an upgrade to any package, subject to availability. It sells out early for night sessions and finals, so check with our team on the latest availability. Prices below are AUD RRP per person; reduced upgrade prices apply when booked with a package. Where to stay

Stay in East Melbourne or on the eastern side of the CBD to be closest to Melbourne Park: hotels there are 400 to 700 metres away on foot, or a few minutes by tram. Southbank and central CBD hotels are 1 to 2.5 kilometres away, a 20-minute walk along the river or through the parklands and Birrarung Marr, or a short tram ride; some hotels along the Yarra and Southbank can arrange river transfers to and from Melbourne Park. During the Australian Open many restaurants and venues are taken over by brand activations, so the walk to the tennis is part of the day.

Getting to Melbourne

Arrive at least a day before your first session. A delayed flight costs you an extra night; a missed session can’t be replaced. Flights can be added to any package and we’ll match the arrival to your first session.

Getting to Melbourne Park

From most of our hotels it’s a walk, from 400 metres. From Flinders Street Station it’s a 10-minute walk through Federation Square and Birrarung Marr, over the Tanderrum Bridge into the precinct. Richmond and Jolimont stations are about 10 minutes on foot. Trams run from the CBD to the precinct, and ticket holders travel free on their session day [confirm 2027], which makes the trip back after a night session easy and safe. Rideshare and river transfers are also available depending on your hotel.

Opening Week, with practice, qualifying and kids’ activities, runs Monday 11 to Saturday 16 January 2027 and isn’t part of the main draw below.

The order of play is published the evening before each session. Session times are as published by Tennis Australia and may change.

Melbourne Park

Melbourne Park has three roofed arenas, Rod Laver Arena (about 15,000 seats), Margaret Court Arena (7,500) and John Cain Arena (10,500) [confirm], plus the outdoor match courts and the precinct, on the edge of the city beside the MCG.

Weather

Melbourne in January is usually warm to hot, but the city is known for four seasons in one day, so expect anything from a cool change to a heatwave. Rod Laver, Margaret Court and John Cain Arena all have retractable roofs, so a reserved seat means play continues in heat or rain; outer-court play can be delayed. Bring a hat, sunscreen and a layer.

Deposit and balance

• Deposit: 25% of the package price per person at the time of booking, plus the full cost of any ticket upgrades and extras. Once early-bird pricing ends, the deposit is 50%.
• Balance: the remaining 75% (or 50%) is due by 9 October 2026.
• Booking after 9 October 2026: full payment at the time of booking.
• Extra services: flights, tours and other add-ons may carry their own payment terms, set out in your quote.

Prices are in AUD. Invoices can be issued and paid in AUD, USD, GBP, EUR or NZD at the mid-market rate on request. Every invoice includes bank transfer details and a Pay Now link for card payment.
