AFL Anzac Day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground is, in my view, one of the most extraordinary occasions in world sport — not because of spectacle alone, but because of what it means. Every year on 25 April, more than 90,000 people come together at the MCG not just to watch a football match, but to be part of something genuinely significant. The atmosphere before the first bounce — the silence during the Anzac ceremony, the Last Post echoing across the ground — is unlike anything else on the sporting calendar. Then the siren sounds, and the MCG becomes the loudest stadium in Australia.

The Collingwood and Essendon Anzac Day clash has been played since 1995, and in that time it has become more than a rivalry. It is a ritual. Families attend together across generations. Groups of friends make the trip from interstate or overseas, year after year. For many, it is the game they will not miss, regardless of which team they support. That is the power of this occasion — it transcends the ladder and belongs to the whole of Australian football.

The MCG itself is one of the great sporting venues on earth. Capacity crowds, a roar that carries deep into the surrounding parklands, and a ground that has hosted some of the defining moments in Australian sporting history.
