AFL Anzac Day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground is, in my view, one of the most extraordinary days in Australian sport — not for the spectacle alone, but for what it means. Every year on 25 April, more than 95,000 people fill the MCG to be part of something genuinely significant. The silence during the Anzac ceremony, the Last Post echoing across the ground, the roar when the siren sounds — there is nothing else like it on the sporting calendar.

The Collingwood and Essendon Anzac Day Clash has been played since 1995, and in that time it has become more than a rivalry — it is a ritual. Families attend across generations. Groups of friends travel from interstate year after year. For many, it is the one game they will not miss, regardless of which team they support. AFL Anzac Day 2027 schedule of play

The full AFL Anzac Day 2027 match details will be confirmed by the AFL closer to the event. The Anzac Day Clash between Collingwood and Essendon is traditionally played on the afternoon of 25 April at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, with the pre-match Anzac Day commemorations forming an integral part of the occasion. For reference, the typical match day structure offers a guide:

Pre-match — Anzac Day commemorations

Gates open from approximately 12:30pm, around two and a half hours before the first bounce. The pre-match Anzac Day ceremony begins around 3:00pm, featuring the Last Post, a minute’s silence, the Welcome to Country and the playing of the national anthems, with more than 95,000 fans inside the MCG.

Match — first bounce

First bounce is anticipated for 3:20pm.

Post-match

The Anzac Day Medal is presented on-ground following the match to the player judged best afield. The MCG empties through to approximately 7:00pm, with free post-match tram services running from Jolimont and Richmond.

Getting to the MCG for AFL Anzac Day 2027

Walking and the free city tram are the two recommended ways to reach the MCG for AFL Anzac Day 2027. The MCG sits within walking distance of most East Melbourne, CBD and Southbank hotels, with a scenic 15–20 minute walk along the Yarra River through Birrarung Marr from Flinders Street Station.

Free trams within the CBD’s Free Tram Zone connect to Jolimont and Richmond stations on either side of the ground, with Metro trains stopping at both stations on match day. Rideshare and taxi drop-offs are available on the surrounding streets, though expect significant delays before and after the match given the size of the crowd. Climate — AFL Anzac Day 2027

April is mid-autumn in Melbourne, with average daytime temperatures around 20°C (68°F) and evenings cooling to approximately 11°C (52°F). Conditions are generally settled, with mild days, low humidity and the occasional shower — ideal weather for exploring the city and walking to the MCG. The MCG is open-air with covered seating across most of the ground, so a light jacket is recommended for the afternoon match and cooler evening hours either side.
