Overview

Update: Presidents Cup 2021 has been postponed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, it will now be played 19-25 September, 2022.

Throughout President Cup’s 27-year history, only two venues have hosted the Presidents Cup more than twice, The Royal Melbourne Golf Club and Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia. Other courses have been played in the US, Canada, South Africa and Korea. In 2022, another new course will be added to the list; Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina, USA.

Quail Hollow however, is not new to elite golf tournaments. The prestigious private club has hosted the Wells Fargo Championship since 2003 in addition to various invitations and the PGA Championship in 2017.

The Presidents Cup is a unique event where the world’s best golfers come together to compete for their team and country. One team represents the US and the other is made up of internationals. Each team has their own respected captain (2019 captains were Ernie Els of South Africa and Tiger Woods of USA). The unique format of foursomes, four-balls and singles makes for fun spectating, great team camaraderie and a fabulous sporting atmosphere. Over the years, names like Norman, Nicklaus, Woods, Palmer, Couples, Price and Thomson have represented their team and country. The next edition of Presidents Cup will be no exception and you can expect the world’s best golfers to be selected by their team captains in their bid to win the prestigious Presidents Cup trophy.

Outside the ropes, the Presidents Cup has a history of putting on a festival-like atmosphere with premium hospitality, grandstands, activations and international culinary options to match all levels of spectating and socialising. The Presidents Cup stands for international goodwill and has a positive, charitable impact across the globe.

Fast Facts

  • Presidents Cup was started in 1994 and is held biennially
  • The tournament is hosted alternately in the United States and in countries represented by the International Team
  • The format is drawn from the Ryder Cup. Teams have 12 players per side and one captain per team. The captains job is to select pairs for the doubles and singles matches. Doubles matches include both alternate shot and best ball formats (foursome and fourball matches). Then there’s singles matches, which happen on Day 4. Each match is worth one point, with a half-point awarded to any halved matches
  • For a team to win the cup, they need 15.5 points from a total of 30 possible points
  • Of the 13 Presidents Cup’s to be held, Team USA has won 11 times with the International Team winning once (one match was tied in 2003 at Fancourt, South Africa)
  • The reigning champions are Team USA, who came from behind to win on Day 4 at Presidents Cup 2019 at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club, captained by Tiger Woods
  • There is no prize money awarded at the Presidents Cup. Instead, net proceeds are distributed to charities selected by players and captains. The first 10 President Cups raised over USD$32 million for charities around the world

Quail Hollow Club

The prestigious Quail Hollow Club is located in Charlotte, North Carolina. The private club, founded in 1959, is a par-72, 6950 m long course. The leafy, parkland course features a stately clubhouse designed in the traditional southern colonial style and has a beautiful flowing course with slick bunkers and sweeping fairways that reward risky shots. Rory McIlroy has the course record of 61, set here in 2015. The club has hosted the Wells Fargo Championship since 2003 and PGA Championship in 2017 amongst other elite events. The course was designed originally by George Cobb and has been modified by Arnold Palmer and Tom Fazio over the years into the Championship-calibre course that it is today.

Destination

Your Host:

Quail Hollow Club is 20 minutes from downtown Charlotte, North Carolina’s largest city. The city was named after George III’s wife and now carries the nickname the Queen City. Charlotte boomed back in the 1850’s with gold fever and is now the third-largest banking center in the US. The CBD is home to futuristic skyscrapers and is officially called ‘uptown.’ That’s where you’ll find museums and the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Outside of the uptown area, Charlotte is made-up of trendy neighbourhoods with historic sites, museums, funky boutiques, breweries, cafes and hip restaurants.

Events Travel’s COVID-19 Global Pandemic Statement

Dear Customers,

In these extraordinary times, we hope you are staying safe and well.

We are optimistic about travel opening up domestically in the next few months within Australia and travel to New Zealand permitted in September. After this, we expect travel to open within the Asia-Pacific region and globally by early 2021.

As such, our full range of packages, tours and services are now on sale for events taking place after 8 October 2020. In addition, events taking place in 2021 and 2022 are now on sale (such as The 150th Open Championship).

All events are pending Government travel restrictions, as well as general health and safety notices published by DFAT Smartraveller. If an event is cancelled, postponed or spectator free due to COVID-19, customers can choose to use their booking payments as credit to the rescheduled event or receive a full refund less a booking fee. This booking fee varies by event. Full details are available within our Booking Terms and Conditions.

We hope that this new policy provides you with reassurance and confidence when booking your sports travel experience with Events Travel.

If you have any questions about this, please feel free to contact any of our team, who look forward to speaking with you soon.

Stay safe and well,
